Skills
As a student, we have to complete a lot of project work every year. Through all my past experiences, I have learnt the skills required to get the project work done on time. We have to work together and communicate with each other. Giving peers feedback is essential so that each individual can improve on their part.
My reflection about the skills acquired while learning: I feel that we all need to be able to communicate well with our teammates and make sure that everyone in the group is doing their part. Teamwork makes everything work, we will stand strong together but never when you are alone.
Mentoring reflections and soft skills honed through non-academic activities: I was able to learn and grow as I was enjoying myself in it. I feel that the only activities that I was able to learn about life experience and learn about how to be a better person was through non-academic activities. Through these activities I was able to obtain skills like communication and listening, this surely boosted my confidence level when I have to present in class and when I have an interview to attend for work.
My personal reflection: I feel that we must have the mindset that we want to learn something new and not just learn it so that we can pass our exams. We must always put in 100% effort to learn everything that is taught and always remember that everything we learn will benefit us.
Internship Experience
Exceeding Your Expectations
The internship has brought in lots of basic skills such as working as a team, communicating with one another, learning from one another, presentation skills as well as planning out schedules to work on the project we will be completing for our Alternative Program. Since our project will be designing and constructing a fuel tank system we will have to brainstorm ideas for our fuel tank system, then we design it together as a team. Throughout the 22 weeks of the Alternative Program, we have seen lots of progression as a team, from not knowing one another to getting together discussing how we can improve on our design, everyone giving their opinion and we learning from one another. Furthermore, we were able to have hands-on experience since we are building the fuel tank using components and materials that we purchase in the local stores, we build the fuel tank from sketch and then assemble it onto our fuel system, although the construction journey was not smooth as a sail, we manage to overcome all the challenges we faced along as a team. Not to mention we went on the extra mile to add on with Arduino board which was totally something new to us and learning it from sketch and now we are able to program our fuel system using Arduino Board. With this journey coming to an end, I am really grateful for the opportunity I am given and would like to thank my teammates as well as my supervisors that helped us along the way.

Teamwork
Just like everyone says teamwork is the secret that makes common people like us achieve uncommon results.
About The Alternative Program
Throughout the 22 weeks of the Alternative Program, I was able to learn new skills with my teammates and improve my final project product step by step from sketch. The most important key skill that I learned was to work together as a team and complete the whole project together, with my teammates being around everything was so much easier and less time-consuming as everyone works together. Not to mention, I was able to make improvements to my final product step-by-step throughout the 22 weeks and showcase the final product that was able to work smoothly and demonstrate to my audience and, show them the progress and final product. With all the weekly presentations of the product, I was able to improve it bit by bit and develop a successful product.

Personal reflection

As we can know that the 4 main dimensions of cultural intelligence are meta-cognition, cognition, motivation, and behavior.
(1)
My difference in interaction/communication style compared to the seniors are I am able to speak to the topic directly and not go one round then to the topic, I am able to speak how I feel through my words but seniors might not be able to do so. Seniors will tend to express it through emotions more. Additionally, not all the seniors speak English, they usually interact with their mother tongue or other dialects such as Cantonese.
(2) I am very used to using smartphones compared to seniors who do not use smartphones during their times. My knowledge and skills about smartphones will surely be better compared to the seniors such as how to operate a smartphone, use the safari to search up on important details but the seniors are limited to only making calls, taking pictures and messaging others.
(3) I think I must have patience with them whenever they talk so that I can clearly understand what they are trying to tell me. Another way is to talk to them in their dialect, this will show that we are able to communicate with them with their preferred dialect.
(4) With a better understanding of seniors, we will be able to interact with the seniors in the patience and understanding way so that the seniors can feel that the things they say we can understand and we know how they actually feel. With this we will be able to share/teach with the senior's apps patiently so that they will be able to understand it and make use of the apps we taught them in the future, making sure that the way/style we teach will be a meaningful lesson for them.
Personal reflection 2
(1) I met one very energetic Auntie that was very attentive and interested in the apps my friend and I were teaching her. She will ask questions if she has any enquire about the app and I am so glad that I was able to answer all her doubts.
(2) When the auntie was using her mobile phone, she actually knew a lot of things apart from the apps my friend and I was about to teach her. She even taught us some hidden secrets we did not know of some apps that she was very familiar with such as Facebook and WeChat. However, there were still some apps she did not know how to use such as MyTransport she have several problems like how does she know the bus stop she is checking is the correct one as well as how can she find out which buses are able to bring her to the different location she wants to go. The senior's experience in learning the app can be improved if we can use real-life demonstrations for them, like bringing them to the bus stop and show them how they can check and make sure that it is the right one (My Transport app).
(3) Some of the barriers in our interaction were that Auntie was not fluent in her English language so at some point in time we are not able to understand her but we manage to overcome it by asking her to speak her most used language. The elderly feel that their phones and the system of their phones are slow and this is very common among young people and its true. The community organization serves the seniors well as they hold such events for us, students, to help out our dearest seniors. We can do more volunteering work to help out the seniors in the community.
(4) The Auntie did not make us feel uncomfortable but instead, she made us feel that our session with them are meaningful. It will cause conflicts and misunderstandings if we do not have enough respect. To me, respect means so much, it is a value that a person must always have and this value will bring you far in life. As long as you respect people, people will respect you. We engineering students should respect all our lecturers and modules. Our lecturers are the ones that make like an engineer and our modules teach us the way to be one. I will keep this value (respect) in my mind wherever I go and wherever I go, I will treat everyone with respect and make sure that everyone is treated right.
